Hillary Chirchir has won this year’s Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon in an unofficial time of 2 hours 22 minutes 31 seconds.
The women’s title went to Ulrike Maisch who completed the 26.2 mile course in an unofficial time of 2 hours 57 minutes 27 seconds.
Although organisers had predicted – that with more elite athletes taking part than ever before – the course records could be under threat, both the men’s and women’s times remain: Aleksey Troshkin in 2 hours 18 minutes and 32 seconds, and Svetlana Pretot in 2 hours 44 minutes 33 seconds.
More than 1,500 runners took part in the full race, the relay race, and the 3 km town run.
The event is now in its 12th year and organisers say it’s now firmly fixed in the international running calendar. This year it attracted runners from more than 20 countries around the globe from as far afield as Trinidad and Tobago and Malaysia.
The marathon is also a fund raising event. Since 2003 Standard Chartered’s chosen charity has been Seeing is Believing (SiB) an initiative to tackle avoidable blindness. Money from this year’s race will go towards a three-year project in Zambia to provide eye care services in underserved districts in Muchinga Province and Eastern Province. Cancer charity Macmillan Jersey will also benefit from the event.
