WATCH: 60,000 people tune into Guernsey's 'stormchaser' fisherman

Thursday 02 November 2023

Tens of thousands of people from around the world tuned into a livestream of Storm Ciarán last night, as a Guernsey fisherman-turned-YouTuber ventured out into the 100mph winds.

Danny Bourgaize is best known for hosting his Inglorious Fishing YouTube channel – where he documents his fishing success in Bailiwick waters for his more than 20,000 followers.

Last night his content was somewhat different, however, as he became a self-proclaimed "storm-chaser" and was joined by several friends as he sought to record the "absolute devastation" wrought upon the island by Storm Ciarán.

At one point he was contacted by Guernsey Police who, according to Danny, told him they’d be unable to help him if he got into trouble.

Unfazed, Danny continued his livestream early into the morning, attracting viewers from around the world – even as far afield as Oregon in the US.

Some viewers were critical of the decision to head out and get so close to the action – similar criticism was also levelled at a man in Jersey, who was branded an "idiot" by social media commentators after being caught on camera running up to huge waves crashing over Jersey sea wall.

Despite conditions now settling across the islands, there is significant debris and wind speeds remain high, so the official advice remains to stay indoors.

In Guernsey, like Jersey, many trees have fallen and some States housing is reported to have been severely damaged. The island's airport and harbour terminal also suffered damage. Assessments of schools and other key island infrastructure are underway.

How is Alderney getting on?

Speaking to Express this morning, Alderney’s States’ representative, Alex Snowdon said Storm Ciaran was hitting the island “hard” as of 09:00.

“I have been told the harbour continues to record constant wind speeds of 70 knots and the advice to islanders remains to stay indoors.

“For Albert equipment has recorded speeds of 104mph.”

A video feed of Braye Harbour is available to see online via Mainbrayce Chandlery's camera.

It’s understood that several trees have fallen and slates have been flying around.
