WATCH: Dive into the Harbourside

Monday 05 November 2018

Seaside views, coastal scenes and colourful sunsets all come together in the buoyant 'Harbourside' exhibition, where eight artists have hung up their artwork, showing their own special way of paying homage to Jersey shores.

Set up at Jane James Studio, the exhibition invites islanders to enjoy photographs, digital illustrations, oil paintings, acrylics and watercolours until the end of the month.

The one thing they have in common, whether they represent it abstractly or figuratively, is their theme, that of Jersey's coasts and surrounding ocean, which inspired the exhibition's title 'Harbourside.'

Local artists Kevin Brace, Celina Borfiga, Heather Barette, Helen Ryan and Gabriella Street all feature in the exhibition, along with the Blackmore family, Rosemary, Lucy and Hannah, and Jane James herself.

The ceramic and driftwood artist invested in the 20 Commercial Buildings space just over a year ago. She previously had a shop on Burrard Street and a separate studio, but the move from 500sqft to 1200 sqft enabled her to bring everything under the same roof. With a shop at the front of the building, a big gallery space for her work and a workshop upstairs, Jane wasn't too sure what to do with the large room located on the ground floor but she quickly found an use for it.

"We didn’t really know what to do with (this room) and just knowing so many talented people around the island, we just wanted to give them a showcase and an opportunity to show their work in this lovely big white box that means you focus so much on the artwork. It’s been amazing, we’re really pleased, really lucky," she explained.

The exhibition invites visitors to explore all different aspects of the seaside. From stunning sunsets to moody sea landscapes, in an array of colours going from blues to greens, yellows and even pinks and purples. Sea creatures, including a Jersey lobster, also feature on the walls.

With Jane and her husband's own boat, Sea Bee, set in the middle of the room next to comfy chairs, visitors can sit back and enjoy the many different views.

'Harbourside' is the first exhibition held in the space but Jane has already promised that many others will follow. In the meantime, she will be switching to a festive theme on 24 and 25 November with a Handmade Christmas Fair. Local artists and crafters will join her to inspire islanders in the run up to Christmas.
