A fire that gutted a home near Beauport on Wednesday evening is currently "under investigation".

Fortunately, no one was hurt after the occupants were alerted by a smoke detector.

At the peak of the blaze, 19 firefighters were tackling the fire at the property, which is just off Route de Camps, which leads from Beauport to the Corbière road.

It is understood that the occupants are now living with friends while the damage is assessed.

The Emergency Control Room at Police Headquarters received multiple calls reporting a house fire in St. Brelade just after 18:00.

Initially, two fire engines were sent. Once they had arrived, they were supported by an on-call fire engine from the Western Station on Route des Quennevais and a water tanker from St. Helier.

Due to the severity of the fire damage to the property the crews were unable to isolate the electricity supply so the JEC was called to disconnect the electricity by cutting the main supply in the road.

"The cause of the fire is currently under investigation," Jersey Fire and Rescue said.

Afterwards, the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service highlighted the importance of having a working smoke detector, which alerted the occupants to the rapidly developing fire allowing them to evacuate safely with their pets.
