WATCH: “Large” chunk of Sark cliff falls over the weekend

Monday 22 January 2024

The Seigneur of Sark is calling for an urgent survey of an iconic walkway connecting Sark and Little Sark after a "large" chunk of it collapsed over the weekend due to the wet weather.

La Coupée spans the distance between Sark and Little Sark. It’s a popular spot for tourists and an essential lifeline for those living in Little Sark.

Christopher Beaumont posted a video of the rockfall on X over the weekend.

"It hasn't been caused by coastal erosion," he told Express. "This fall is due to the wet weather getting into the rocks."

He stressed that the collapse seems to have happened far enough away that the integrity of the road hasn't been impacted, but said "it does highlight that it's not as stable as we'd like to think".

"Wouldn't it be good to have a survey? To at least find out what the future holds for La Coupée?"

It's not the first time the cliffs surrounding La Coupee have slipped. In 2010 there was a major landslide that took out the path leading down to La Grande Greve.

"What do we do about Little Sark if La Coupée were to disappear?" mused Mr Beaumont.

Express has reached out to the government of Sark to find out about the future of La Coupée and whether a survey could be undertaken.
