WATCH: Relief as children – 2 and 5 – "unharmed" in blast

Thursday 27 June 2024

A two and five-year-old whose bedroom was left exposed when the front wall of their home collapsed in a reported explosion last night were "unharmed", it has been confirmed.

Their parents remain "stable" in hospital after the blast at Mont Pinel which occurred around 23:00 last night, causing a major incident to be declared. 19 people living in the area have been displaced.

Officers said tonight that this had since been stepped down, while they moved into "recovery phase".

"No one's going to survive that"

The road was closed to access after the incident and emergency services remained present in the area throughout the day.

The cause of the incident is yet to be confirmed. Parts of the road were excavated today. Jersey Electricity and Island Energy have been assisting.

Avril Raine (60), who was in a neighbouring property, described the sound of the explosion as a "massive bang" that left her fearing "no one's going to survive that".

But emergency services confirmed this evening that the four members of the family living inside the home were safe.

Children "unharmed" and parents "stable"

It's understood the family were rescued shortly before the front wall of the home collapsed. It left the children's room and bunkbeds exposed.

The two young children were described as "unharmed", while their parents are in a "stable" condition in hospital. Their injuries are said to be "non-life threatening or life-changing".

The two youngsters are "being supported", officers said.

19 people displaced

19 people have been displaced as a result and are being supported with accommodation.

Following the blast, many were in St Saviour Parish Hall.

"We were notified soon after and opened St Saviour's Parish Hall and staff came in, neighbours were evacuated as a precaution up to the Parish Hall," Constable Kevin Lewis told Express this morning.

Area "secure"

The blast left significant debris behind – one resident who was woken up by the noise said it was "very powerful" and that rubble fell onto her van.

Officers said tonight that the scene is currently "secure" but that they will remain present.

Structural engineers will be attending the property, and three neighbouring ones, to assess the structural integrity of the sites before investigations can begin.

"Our thoughts are with the family"

Earlier today, the Chief Minister said that Government would be providing "ongoing support" to those living in the four affected homes.

"Our thoughts are with the family affected and those who have been displaced as a result," he said.
