A new mural soon to be swimming onto the walls of one of the island's oldest markets will transport islanders under the sea.
That's the hope of Eliza Anna Reine, whose ethereal collages have been enchanting islanders ever since the Latvia-born artist burst onto the local creative scene.
She gave Expressa sneak peek at her sea-themed creation, which will soon adorn an area of the Fish Market...

For the past week, Eliza has been working away in her La Folie-based studio on the design, which, in common with her other works, centres on a female figure.
But whilst her mystical collages usually oscillate between warm oranges, rich reds, deep purples and. more recently, pastel pinks, this one called for a different colour palette.
Swimming in a sea of clouds in different shades of blue, the woman is surrounded by delicate and colourful details, emulating an underwater snapshot.

“She is encircled by different plants you can find in the bottom of the sea,” Elīza said. “Luckily they are quite colourful which is great. These details I think give quite a lot of formality as I like to say to my artwork.”
Due to the nature of her creative process – which involves the collage, an abstract background and the details - Elīza has created the mural on a wooden panel.
“I need the surface to be horizontal because the abstracts colour blobs are created by just pouring colour all over the surface,” she explained. “I just kind of left it in the studio overnight and hoped that it’s going to look like something after drying!”

As this is the first time Elīza is working on a wooden panel, she expected the process to be challenging, but confessed she actually likes the way the mural currently looks, even though it is still a work in progress.
“I still need to figure out the exact colours so I can draw on top of them, so that's quite interesting,” she said.
“I’m still experimenting, and I am trying not to mess it up. I’m quite pleased with how it looks at the moment!”

The commission comes amid a busy summer for the artist, who is currently gearing up for an open studio event in the next few weeks.>
She also recently enjoyed sell-out success at Private & Public's 'Pink' exhibition, which aimed to explore and challenge themes of femininity.
Whilst Elīza puts the finishing touches to her mural, islanders can still see that work on display at the Philips Street gallery between 10:00 and 13:00, Monday to Friday.
