If you were worried about your home getting damaged in the storm last night, spare a thought for the fire fighters who had to brave the gales and go and secure the roof of the old General Hospital building.
Just after 17:30 last night nurses spotted parts of the roof coming off in the high winds, and called the fire service to make sure they didn't fall and hurt someone.
The poor conditions meant it was a tough call as to whether they could use their aerial ladder or not, since they can only extend it in Force 6 winds or less. Two firefighters in safety harnesses made the attempt, and were able to safely secure the damaged roof from the ladder platform's cage.
This morning the wind warnings have been downgraded from Red to Orange, a Force 8 gale, but that still means ferry services to Poole and St Malo today have been cancelled.
Paul Luxon, CEO of Condor Ferries said: "We were aware that the prevailing weather was likely to have an impact on both sea and air travel to and from the islands and on the mainland, but are particularly well versed in pro-actively contacting our passengers to offer alternative arrangements.
"I would emphasise that safety, passenger comfort and re-arranging alternative travel are naturally our primary considerations."
The weather is forecast is gradually get better through the day:
Wind today: NW'ly F6-7, occasionally F8 this morning, decreasing F5-6 after midnight. https://t.co/nS0EWQaUPR
