Could you walk or run 50 miles in a month?

Wednesday 01 January 2025

Islanders are being challenged to walk or run 50 miles this month to raise money to help support the 1,600 people in Jersey living with dementia.

Dementia Jersey's 50 Mile Challenge encourages participants to get outdoors and be active while raising funds.

"Kickstart the new year in a healthy way"

The funds will go towards supporting dementia sufferers and their families, as well as helping the charity raise awareness and educate islanders about disease and remove the stigma surrounding it.

Claudine Snape, Dementia Jersey CEO, said: "This challenge is a fantastic way to kickstart the new year in a healthy way while helping to raise valuable funds for Dementia Jersey.

"In January 2024 we had 220 participants, and this year we hope to exceed those numbers and make a real difference in the lives of islanders living with dementia," she continued.

Annual running costs over £700k

"With an annual running cost of over £700,000, we heavily rely on support from others to be able to continue to provide a lifeline to people who need it most."

Participants are asked to complete 50 miles by 31 January, and they can either walk, run or jog at their own pace.

Now in its fourth year, the initiative was first organised by Dementia Jersey’s volunteer Simone Sains.

It has become one of the charity’s most successful fundraising events, with the 2024 event raising over £14,000 with 220 participants.
