Young man bound over for elbowing pub manager

A 19-year-old man who elbowed a pub manager, hitting him on the side of the nose, has been bound over for three months by the Magistrate's Court.

Liam Adrian White was already under probation after being convicted of larceny, possession of cannabis and setting fire to a property at the end of July.

Legal adviser Carla Carvalho told Court that on 8 August, while White was in a pub, the assistant manager became concerned that he had caused damage to a tree on the property. He called his manager who came to speak to White. The Court heard while they were both talking to him, White became very defensive and aggressive. At one point, he jumped backwards in the direction of the victim and swung his elbow towards the man's head. White's elbow struck the left side of the man's nose but didn't cause any visible injury.

Advocate Adam Harrison, who was defending, explained that White had felt intimidated and claustrophobic when he found himself between the two men. As he doesn't like to be blocked in, he moved backwards and struck the victim but didn't intend to hurt him.

Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris told White: "We have seen you a fair bit this year but this is the first time there is anything approaching violence. You have to realise that when you have been drinking your response to events changes, normally for the worst."

He bound White over for three months while the previous probation order continues. The Assistant Magistrate told White he still had seven months to go adding, "By turning up for your appointments, doing your work and keeping your life on track, you will be out of trouble."
