When a yoga teacher is in need of even more relaxation, what does she do? Reach out for a comforting plate of kitchari, read a book and go to her studio.
Anna Haines recently opened Ashtanga Yoga Jersey in the Quakers Meeting House at La Colomberie.
She has been teaching yoga in the island for the past three years.
Following training at the Sharath Yoga Centre, she now teaches Mysore-style classes, which differ from other yoga classes as each practitioner is taught individually in a group setting, rather than led by a teacher instructing in front of the class.
She shared her favourite ways to unwind, besides yoga...
...Kitchari. It's a dish that will always hit the spot for me!
It is traditionally made with a mix of yellow mung dal and basmati rice, although it can be replaced by other lentils or quinoa! Kitchari is cooked in a mix of spices including cumin and mustard seeds, turmeric, ground coriander, fresh ginger, and asafoetida, and finished with veggies and a generous portion of ghee.
It's a delightfully heart-warming and deeply nourishing meal.
...a strong cup of black coffee. I start my day at 03:50 and I wouldn't make it happen without it!
I tend to drink water only throughout the day, but ginger beer or kombucha is my go-to tonic on a hot sunny day.
I always end the day with a cup of hot lemon and ginger tea. If I don't make it myself using raw ingredients, I choose the Clippers above any other brand!
...anything from Bob Marley to Chopin.
I love having easy-to-listen classical music in the background. But for the house chores, I will put on AC/DC or some classical 'get-sh*t-done' rock and roll! I don't put on any music during my yoga classes. Yoga is a spiritual and silent practice, an opportunity to tune in to your breath.

...'Atomic Habits' by James Clear.
The book illustrates how small changes every day, deliver big results. It's the truth I have been instilling in my students - a long yoga practice once a week, won't bring desired benefits, if you'd like to change your life take a short 20-minute practice every day!
So if you're behind with your New Year's resolutions, it's not all lost yet - read 'Atomic Habits' and see for yourself how a 1% improvement can amount to a profound change!
...the Meeting House at La Colomberie, where I hold my daily yoga program.
There is something about this room, the ambiance, high wooden ceilings, and the immediate warmth as you walk in. Meditation comes easy there!
For the family adventure though, I would go to Beauport Bay! The trip there never disappoints!
