With this year's iteration of the Sanctuary Trust's 'Sleep Out' event fast approaching, Express reporter James Jeune shares his experience of sleeping out last year...
The Sleep Out event, which sees islanders abandon the comfort of their homes for a night in Pier Road car park, will take place this year on Friday 17 November.
Funds raised by participants will help the organisation provide accommodation and support to men with a range of issues, including homelessness and
addiction.
More than 90 people slept overnight in the car park last November – exceeding the total raised from all of the previous Sleep Outs combined.
Express reporter James Jeune shares his memories of sleeping out last year...
"The first thing that dawned on me, after claiming a spot for my sleeping bag, was the number of politicians around me.
A few metres to my left, Trinity Constable Philip Le Sueur loaded up some music and adjusts his headphones in anticipation of the long night ahead, while directly opposite me I saw Deputy Sam Mézec also trying to make himself comfortable.

In another section of the car park, I could hear Housing Minister David Warr chatting away with other Sleep Out participants.
The second realisation I had was that the bright, glaring lights beaming down on me were not going to turn themselves off anytime soon.
This prompted me to quickly turn my hoodie into a makeshift face-mask, while I attempted to establish the best position to lay my head on my sports bag - now doubling as a pillow.
Sanctuary Chair Frank Walker addressed the group, informing us that the 2022 event had raised more money than ever before.

Despite the lack of comfort, the event had a strong sense of community.
This is partially because those choosing to 'rough it out' for the night are united by the fact they are raising money for an organisation that helps those who have no choice but to do so on a regular basis.
Overall, the experience was very humbling, implanting a brief memory of what life could be like without a home.
And keep in mind, we had the benefit of security, food, music and plenty of company!"
