A new Chair with a financial services background and many decades in island sport has been appointed to lead the Board of Directors at Jersey Sport.

Andrew Whelan, current Executive Director at Tenn Capital will manage the overall performance, reporting and governance at Jersey Sport.

The charity and arms-length Government supported organisation said that Mr Whelan's "impressive track record of success" meant the panel were unanimous in there decision to appoint him in the voluntary position.

"Excited" to work on providing "an inclusive opportunity"

A keen sportsman and qualified CrossFit coach, Andrew has represented Jersey in Basketball and Jersey and Hampshire County in Rugby.

On his appointment he said: "I am delighted to join Jersey Sport at an exciting time in its evolution.

"Having played sport within and for the island over the past four decades, it is wonderful to be able to contribute to the continued development and growth of island sport. I am excited to work with David and his team, plus my fellow Board members, in providing an inclusive opportunity for all sporting activity within the island.”

Mr Whelan will bring his experience in international business, asset management, wealth, FinTech, investment and corporate market sectors to his role as Chair.

Prior to his position in Jersey he has sat on various business Boards around the world including the UK, USA, Dubai and Africa.

"A very exciting time"

Lisa Mclauchlan, Non-Executive Director at Jersey Sport, said: “We are extremely fortunate to be welcoming Andrew to the Jersey Sport Board. It is a very exciting time for sport in Jersey and Jersey Sport, as we move forward reinvigorating relationships with some of our key stakeholders.

"We would like to say thank you to Steve Law, our Interim Chair, for his guidance and leadership over the past months, and we look forward to steering the Jersey Sport team into their next phase of development to support sport in Jersey.”

Over summer, Jersey Sport also welcomed David Kennedy, the former CEO of the Jersey Football Association, as its new Chief Executive. He replaced Interim CEO Mark Wanless, who himself stepped in after Catriona McAllister left the organisation she had led since its foundation six-and-half years prior.
