Future hosts confirmed for Island Games

Tuesday 16 July 2024

Island Games competitors and supporters will head to the Faroe Islands in 2027, Isle of Man 2029 and then likely Gotland in 2031 after arrangements for future competitions were confirmed.

The International Island Games Association rubber stamped the arrangements at its AGM in Orkney, where the Games take place next year and delegates have been viewing the sporting infrastructure on offer.

It will be the second time the Faroe Islands have hosted the Island Games after 1989. The 21st Island Games will take place on 3–9 July 2027.

The host of the 2029 event will be the Isle of Man, who organised the first Island Games in 1985 and then was the destination again in 2001. The 22nd Island Games will be held on 14–20 July 2029.

Gotland, the host of the Island Games in 1999 and 2017, was confirmed as the preferred bidder for the 2031 Island Games.

"We are delighted to see these future Host Island arrangements confirmed today, and we look forward to seeing more progress in their arrangements," said Andrew Inkster, the newly elected Chairman of the IIGA.

"With a number of other Member Islands also showing serious interest in becoming a Host, we are confident that our Games are secure for the future."

Sport in Orkney has been given a £1m investment boost from Scottish Government and National Lottery funding as it gets ready for next year.

It will go on various projects, including a near £250,000 investment in the athletics track.

Money will also allow 24 ILCA sailing boats to be purchased for the Games.

A new mountain bike trail will receive £243,220 at the Pickaquoy Centre, which will host the mountain bike event.
