Jersey discus star breaks own record on way to gold - Island Games Day 4

Thursday 13 July 2023

Jersey's Shadine Duquemin eclipsed her own Island Games record – set at Jersey 2015 – on her way to discus gold.

Here's all the action from day 4 of the Island Games 2023, which is being hosted in Guernsey...

Athletics

Jersey's Shadine Duquemin broke her own Island Games record as she grabbed the gold.

Duquemin, who reached 49.34m in the opening round, 76cm further than in Jersey eight years ago.

But despite winning gold, Duquemin wasn’t happy with how far she was throwing, made a lot more difficult by the wind blustering from left to right across the field.

"I was disappointed with the distance because I feel I am in much better shape than that," she said. "But it was really difficult in the conditions today. The wind was really strong and, when it's from the left, it's very difficult for us, especially with the one-kilo discus.

"I am really pleased I got the gold and a Games record but disappointed with the distance, so a frustrating night for me."

Meanwhile, Jamie Oldham looks like he has been awarded his silver medal after coming second in the 200 metres. Controversy shrouded the athletics track at Footes Lane after a technical issue with the athletes’ timing, leaving organisers embarrassed, apologetic and frantically looking for a consensus.

Shooting

At the shooting range, JCG student Libby Hart took ISSF 10m air rifle gold – despite only having taken up shooting six months ago.

Hart, who turned her attention to air rifle less than a year ago, came through a tough challenge from Guernsey's Andrea Guillou to top the podium.

Badminton

There was a first medal of the Games for the former Commonwealth duo of Alex Hutchings and Matt Bignell.

The pair got through to the semi-finals, where they were defeated by the Menorcan sibling tandem of Eric and Albert Navarro Comes but with no 3rd/4th place play-off both Jersey and Guernsey were awarded bronze.

Swimming

The women’s 4x100m freestyle team of Gemma Atherley, Megan Hansford, Siena Stephens and Alana Woodhall were locked in a four-way tussle for the top for much of the race but Games veteran Atherley produced a stunning final leg to win gold ahead of the Cayman Islands.

The men’s 4x100m medley relay team of Ollie Brehaut, Thomas Deffains, Isaac Dodds and Robbie Jones snatched victory from the hands of hosts Guernsey, with Brehaut producing a star turn in the freestyle anchor leg.

Dodds and Jones had both won individual golds earlier in the evening. Jones won the 100m individual medley in a time of 56.59 while Dodds produced a dominant performance to finish four seconds ahead of his nearest rivals.

Indoor Bowls

A second bronze for Jersey’s indoor bowls team was added to the medal pile - this time for open pairs tandem of Sally Black and Jean Holmes.

Playing in Group B, the duo beat both the Falkland Islands and Ynys Môn, while dropping just one match to Guernsey. They finished second overall and thus claimed the bronze.

Archery

Lucy O’Sullivan picked up her fourth gold medal of Guernsey 2023 in the compound head-tohead knockouts, beating Jersey teammate Angela Perrett into silver.

Table tennis

Fresh from taking a leading role in Jersey’s historic first table tennis team gold on Tuesday, Hannah Silcock produced another stunning performance that belied her tender years to claim singles gold.

Silcock dropped just one game on her way to the final where she faced a daunting prospect in number one seed and multi-Island Games champion Marina Donner of Åland, who had beaten her 3-0 in the team event.

But, unfazed by the challenge in front of her, Silcock, just one day after turning 16, put in another clinical performance to win Jersey’s first ever singles table tennis gold.

Sailing

James Tilley is still in with a medal chance in the ILCA 7 contest, after winning race 7. He currently lies in fourth.

Jersey’s sailing quartet are still in with a shout of a team medal, currently sitting in fourth place.
