Jersey softball almost topple a decade of Muratti losses

Thursday 19 September 2024

Jersey softball gave a dominant Guernsey A squad their closest Muratti in 12 years.

Although the Sarnians left with all four available trophies from Les Quennevais last Saturday, the Caesarean As gave their Guernsey rivals their toughest match yet.

They raced out of the blocks in the Muratti clash, halting the Sarnian opening innings at three and an equal fourth innings left Jersey 11-8 and the Caesareans edged further with another two home runs.

Sensing defeat on the horizon for the first time in over a decade, Guernsey A then put together an impressive penultimate innings and Jersey just about remained ahead before the final innings as three players in red scrambled their way to the home plate, leaving Guernsey trailing 14-16.

The Sarnians continued their comeback, adding another five to the board, placing all the pressure on Jersey but they were only able to make one full run home before getting caught out to end the clash.

Claudine Snape, Island Coach at Jersey Softball, said she was "so proud" of the team's performance despite another loss. “We haven’t won [the A Muratti] in something like 12 years, and in the past, the matches haven’t been the most competitive," she said.

“I’m so proud of the effort we have put in over this past year and it’s so nice to see such a difference. When you’ve put in all that effort, and all the training, to actually have something to show for it, particularly, to show Guernsey that we’ve improved is really rewarding.”

The B Muratti was a much lower scoring game with Guernsey winning 8-2.
