Pétanque is coming home!

Friday 26 July 2024

Jersey plays host to one of Britain’s biggest pétanque events next weekend - the Pétanque Home Nations Championship.

Held at the Weighbridge on 2 and 3 August, 24 players from each of the four nations and Jersey will be competing for the coveted trophy, which England have won consecutively in the annual competition since 2000.

It is only the second time Jersey has hosted the event, having only been invited to take part in 2016, and it's hoped that this year's home advantage will help clinch them the win.

Pétanque Jersey Chair, Dave Ibitson is upbeat about the upcoming Home Nations.

Given our home advantage I believe this year is our chance to upset the odds and this will be our best opportunity to claim the trophy," he said.

"The Jersey team are performing well at the moment and have benefitted from sessions from top European coaches and recently one of our triplesteams were runners-up in the London Open championship, only losing out in the final to a Spanish trio which included a former world champion.”

Jersey was pipped by just three match points when it last hosted in 2019, and has come second to England in the five years since.

This year, Pétanque Jersey is pulling out all the stops to bring pétanque to the Weighbridge. The Jersey Development Company are key sponsors and will provide a marquee with tiered seating for spectators to be close to the action. Food and drink will be available at nearby outlets.

Over the two-day session, there will be a QR Code available on the Pétanque Jersey website to access live scores.
