Q&A: Bowls club looks ahead after 30 years of fun, friendship and boosting wellbeing

Friday 01 November 2024

Trinity Bowls Club is one of Jersey's smaller associations of the lawn game that the island has had much success in.

Having recently celebrated their 30th anniversary, the club is now looking to the future and hoping to create a "safe" and "friendly" environment for newcomers to get involved and meet likeminded people.

Express spoke with the club's secretary Norman Cabot, to understand more about the Eastern indoor club and how islanders can get involved...

What does the club mean to the community?

We believe the club makes a positive contribution to the wide range of sporting/leisure activities available to islanders. It provides an opportunity for members of the community to make use of the excellent indoor facilities to enjoy a game of bowls with friends and to take part in the various competitions and social events.

Do you have to live in Trinity to become a member?

Membership of the club is open to all islanders and is not restricted to Trinity parishioners. T

he club is keen to introduce new players to the game and has even run sessions for the cubs and the scouts who use the Trinity Youth Centre as their base.

Do you play in regular competitions?

The club runs a variety of competitions between October and May and members also take part in competitions run by other bowls clubs.

What are the benefits of joining a club like yours?

There are a wide variety of benefits. Apart from gentle exercise and the opportunity to develop motor skills, the club provides an opportunity for members to meet up and enjoy some friendly competition as well as organising a variety of social events.

Tell me about your annual coffee morning.

The coffee morning is an annual social event which was started to raise money to renew the bowling mat but has since developed into a popular get together for visitors from all over the island who come to meet friends over a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy a variety of stalls. All visitors can expect a warm welcome.

What would you like the club to look like in a few years time?

The vision for the club is to maintain and if possible increase its membership so that it can continue to provide the opportunity for all islanders to enjoy a friendly game of bowls in comfortable, safe surroundings and thereby making a positive contribution to the wellbeing of islanders.
