A local Strongman competitor and personal trainer has set up the first deadlifting championships in the Channel Islands.

Competitors made their way to St Clement's Parish Hall last weekend to compete the first Channel Islands Deadlift Championships.

The event was organised by local personal trainer James Stewart.

After placing 2nd in Britain's Strongest Masters and 3rd in Europe's Strongest Masters last year, Mr Stewart wanted to bring a slice of the Strongman action back home.

The inaugural Jersey competition featured two categories: the standard deadlift and the 18-inch deadlift, which starts from a higher point.

Mr Stewart won the 18-inch deadlift category by lifting 470kg.

Daniel Aires, another experienced local lifter, topped the standard deadlift category with a 300kg lift.

In the standard category, a tie-break ensued for third place where two competitors raced to lift as many 100kg reps in 60 seconds as possible.

As the first competition of its kind in the Channel Islands, Mr Stewart expressed how "nice" it was to create something locally.

"I've always wanted to set something up," he said.

Alongside his own successful lifting career, Mr Stewart said that he has always enjoyed watching others.

"I lifted a weight [470kg] that only a handful of people of the planet can lift, but I got more of a kick out of watching people lift for the first time," he said.

"I like to inspire others and see them do something they might learn to love."

Mr Stewart said that the competition will "definitely" take place again next year.

"We will add a women's category and bring in more of a Strongman element too," he added.

The Channel Islands Deadlift Championships were held in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

It is a cause close to Mr Stewart's heart, as the organiser has friends impacted by the incurable condition.
