How I unwind: Tamara Lopez Dominguez, The Little Things

Friday 08 September 2023

A Spanish-born, Jersey-based interior design advisor has opened up about the "little things in life" she loves to do when she wants to kick back.

Tamara Lopez Dominguez works as an interior design advisor and is the owner of a small handmade goods business, 'The Little Things by Tamara'.

Originally from Galicia, which she describes as "a gorgeous region in the north west of Spain", Tamara has been in Jersey for the past eight years.

"I love the idea of a slow life and the Danish concept of hygge," she said. "As an example, one of my biggest pleasures in life is going for a walk in Autumn: the fallen leaves, the smell of the fires, being wrapped up with a warm scarf… A long conversation with a friend, a hug from a family member, old photos, a cup of tea by a fireplace…are some of the simple things that fill my soul."

She opened up about the top things she does to relax...

To unwind, I eat...

Tamara baking

It depends on the day and mood.

On the weekend, I prepare what I like to call relaxing breakfasts, which means baking some scones, bread or croissants and eating with no rush at all.

Most of the time they tend to become brunches, but I don’t mind all the effort, as I love the smell of freshly home baked goods and it feels like the time slows down.

I drink...

A nice cup of tea. If I am honest, before moving to Jersey I thought adding milk to some water was kind of weird. Now, I think there is nothing better than a cup of tea by the fire on a rainy day. Every now and then I will have a fruity G&T or a glass of wine, but I can easily survive without alcohol.

I listen to...

The rain. I come from a region where we do get quite a bit of it, so I am used to it, and I find it very relaxing.

When it comes to music, I listen to a bit of everything. It depends on the day and my mood or what I am doing. If I am working on my small business, I love listening to AlexRainBird Music’s playlists.

Otherwise, anything from Mumford and Sons to Leon Bridges, Paolo Nutini or some classics.

I read...

reading book

...not as much as I used or would like to. I haven’t got much spare time, but when I do get the chance to grab a book I love inspirational stories and lifestyle books.

One of my favourite books ever is “Man’s search for meaning” by Viktor Frankl, but I can easily enjoy a cheesy love story as well.

I do keep buying books though (hoping I will read them eventually). I can’t help it, especially if I am in a nice bookshop (no e-books for me, thanks!).

I do…

tamara crochet

...anything crafty!

I have always been very creative and both my full time job and my small business allow me to explore this side of me.

I focus mainly on crochet but I love trying new things: wood burning, wreaths, painting… I have even made some furniture for my house!
