Are you prepared for sex discrimination rules?

Law at Work are holding a briefing at the end of the month about new sex discrimination rules that come into force in September.

Following on from the introduction of protection from race discrimination last year, new protection will be given to sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment and pregnancy and maternity (including breastfeeding) from 1 September.

The law change means that it will be illegal for employers and service providers to discriminate against their workers or customers, for example, on the grounds of them being a woman or homosexual or pregnant or on maternity.

The panel will be Sharon Peacock, discrimination specialist and Technical Director at Law At Work, Malcolm Ferey, Chief Executive Officer of the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, and Vic Tanner Davy, founder of campaign and support group Trans* Jersey.

 Law At Work Managing Director, Kelly Flageul said: “Race discrimination was a gentle introduction for Jersey businesses to the world of discrimination but sex discrimination could affect us all. This, together with the new laws on maternity, parental and adoption rights makes September an onerous time for employers – so we thought, this calls for a straight-talking session”.
