Family-run decorators introduce paid mental health days

Thursday 31 August 2023

A family-run local decorating company has introduced a new policy to help employees with their mental health – which they hope will inspire wider change in the industry.

Under DGR Slatter Decorators' new policy, all employees will be entitled to two fully paid mental health days per year.

The approach is the brainchild of sisters Nichola and Karen Slatter, who were keen to address the fact that wellbeing concerns – and men's mental health in particular – are often sidelined in what is a traditionally male-dominated industry.

The hope is that employees will use the days for self-care, and that this will help to increase productivity.

Karen, who is a company Director and FAA Level 3 Award recipient for Supervising First Aid in Mental Health, explained: “Tradition doesn't mean staying stagnant.

"We believe in the power of change, and it starts by taking a proactive stance on mental health in our industry."

"Our commitment to our employees' wellbeing extends beyond profit margins," she added.

"We are investing in their mental health, offering them the space they need to rejuvenate and recharge.”
