"Experienced economist" sought to lead independent Gov advisory panel

Monday 08 January 2024

The Government is looking for a new leader for the body that provides independent advice on the island's economy, public finances and fiscal policy – offering remuneration of £50,000 for an annual commitment of 20 days.

The role of Fiscal Policy Panel Chair has been held by Dame Kate Barker since 2016.

Dame Kate, who has been a former Senior Adviser to Credit Suisse, Chief Economic Adviser to the Confederation of British Industry and member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, joined the panel in 2014.

Formed in 2007 and given statutory standing in 2014, the FPP provides the Treasury Minister and States Members with independent advice on:

  • the strength of Jersey's economy, the economic outlook, and the economic cycle in Jersey;

  • the sustainability of the public finances in the medium and long-term including the net asset position;

  • and fiscal policy including the balance of tax and spend and the use of the Strategic Reserve and the Stabilisation Fund.

The Government confirmed that a specialist UK firm – Odgers Berndtson – had been recruited to lead the search because "the successful candidate is expected to be a leading economist with considerable experience".
