Recruitment company GR8 has become the first business in the Channel Islands to partner with an app that supports overseas jobseekers through sharing accurate information and advice about working abroad.
The 'Just Good Work' app was developed so candidates have access to anything they would need before accepting work overseas, such as their rights and responsibilities or how to access help.
Through its partnership with GR8, Just Good Work now includes information about living and working in Jersey. The app will soon include information about living and working in Guernsey too.
Em Holliday, Rest of the World Operations Director at GR8, said: “Among the key recommendations of the Work Permit Holder Welfare Review was that there should be more information on living and working in Jersey so people can make informed decisions before they decide to come here.
“They’ll be able to get information on visas, medical and contract information, but it also allows them to share their experiences, safely secure their documents and access help should they need it.”
Ms Holliday added that the app provided a solution that “tackles exploitation by giving migrant workers the information they need to choose and plan their work journey”.
“We also want to enhance our commitment to their welfare and will be offering access to a private healthcare service in 2025 to all work permit holders,” she said.
Quintin Lake, Managing Director of Just Good Work, explained that the app was built because “some people working overseas were stuck in a cycle where they were working hard but were not earning enough to pay off debts”.
He said: “The recruitment process and debt bondage stand out as key areas of exploitation, extortion and deception.
"The app gives visibility to workers so they know what to expect before they accept a job, but it also lets employers see the process so they can understand the journey their staff are on.
"It means that employers and employees can know what’s OK and what’s not OK at every stage of the process.
"It’s like a companion that helps and guides people through their journey from looking for work to their eventual return home.”
