Jersey Farmers Union appoints new President

Friday 15 December 2023

A member of one of Jersey's oldest farming families has been appointed as the President of the Jersey Farmers Union.

Douglas Richardson, the man behind Richardson's Jersey Royals which dates back to the 1500s, was appointed to the top job at the JFU's recent Annual General Meeting, following the retirement of Peter Le Maistre, who has served for seven years.

Since 2011, Mr Richardson had held the position of Vice-President – a role that will now be taken over by Mike Renouard.

Also stepping down after seven years was Honorary Treasurer Barrie Hamel, who will be replaced by Chris Le Marquand.

"It is a great honour to lead the Jersey Farmers' Union," said Mr Richardson.

"Peter will be a hard act to follow and I hope to build on the collaborative approach he maintained in working with others on matters that affect the agricultural industry.

"I particularly look forward to working with all sectors of our industry, as well as other organisations, to ensure that farming in Jersey remains vibrant and viable."
