Senior lawyers praise "outstanding results" by students

Wednesday 03 February 2016

The Law Society of Jersey and the Institute of Law have held their annual prizegiving for those students who achieved the highest marks in the Jersey advocacy exams in 2015 and for the best performing law degree students in the University of London International Programme’s LLB.

The Law Society of Jersey also presented its Junior Lawyer of the Year Award.

Co-hosted by the Law Society of Jersey and the Institute of Law, the prizes were presented by the Deputy Bailiff, Timothy Le Cocq, in his capacity as President of the Board of Examiners.

President of The Law Society of Jersey, Advocate Jonathan Speck said: “The route to qualifying as a Jersey Advocate or Solicitor requires a considerable level of study and dedication and to achieve success is a great achievement.

"24 new Advocates and Solicitors were sworn in during 2015, having successfully completed their studies through the Institute of Law.  Student numbers on both the Jersey Law Course and LLB are at record levels and we are confident that this augurs well for the future generation of lawyers who will serve the increasing legal needs of our Island.”

Ogier’s Daniel Read received three awards, the first student of the Jersey advocacy exams to be awarded three prizes in one year.

A member of Ogier’s Dispute Resolution team, he got top marks in the Civil and Criminal Procedure paper in the Jersey advocacy exams. He also gained top marks in the Succession paper and joint top in the Company Law paper.

Ogier partner Nigel Sanders said: “The exams required to qualify as a Jersey Advocate are notoriously challenging and so for Daniel to achieve top marks is testament to his hard work and commitment. That he gained top marks in three out of the four exams he sat is an outstanding achievement by Daniel and one that will be hard to follow.

“Daniel has been a member of Ogier’s Jersey Dispute Resolution team for coming up to three years and over that time has developed not only his employment law expertise but a broader commercial practice, as well as being a member of our regulatory practice group. Qualifying as an Advocate will be an important milestone for Daniel and our team and we wish him every success for the rest of the exams he will be taking this summer.”

Chairman of the Institute of Law’s Governing Body, Senator Sir Philip Bailhache said: “The Institute is delighted at the overall high standards achieved by our students and particularly pleased by some outstanding results.”
