Jersey Post has won a major international award for its new scheme that gets postmen to look out for vulnerable Islanders isolated in their homes.
The States-owned company beat off competition from two of the world’s biggest postal companies – the US Postal Service and Deutsche Post DHL to scoop top prize in the Corporate Social Responsibility category at the World Mail Awards in Berlin.
The “Call and Check” scheme is the brainchild of Joe Dickinson who came up with the idea for an in-house competition which was launched to get staff thinking of ways to deliver new revenue streams for the business.
25 Islanders are helping pilot the scheme in St Brelade but it’s proving such a success that it is being rolled-out to parishioners in St Ouen, St Peter and St Mary in the coming weeks and will eventually be offered as an Island-wide service. It's a free service during the trial but the company is looking at ways of funding it in the future.
Director of Postal Operations Andy Jehan said: "We’re looking for the users to pay for the service – either the individual themselves or the body that’s caring for that individual. The aim is to keep people at home longer, we think we can help achieve that aim and keep costs down.”
It's been a great week for Jersey Post - last Friday the company picked up the Community Enterprise Award at the 2014 Awards for Enterprise, in the only category voted for by the public.
