Public projects take the plaudits at Jersey Construction Awards

Tuesday 13 October 2015

Two very public projects came out on top at the Jersey Construction Awards held at the Hotel de France.

Jersey Electricity’s Normandie 3 undersea power cable project and the returning of the Plémont headland to nature by AAL Recycling won the Benest and Syvret Project of the Year over £1million and the Villeroy & Boch Project of the Year up to £1million, respectively.

On an evening when the very best of Jersey’s construction industry was able to celebrate the sector’s strengths and everyone’s hard work in successfully negotiating the economic downturn, the guests were under no illusions about the importance of self-belief and hard work when they were treated to an incredibly inspiring speech by explorer and adventurer, Miles Hilton-Barber, kindly sponsored by HR Now.

Hosted by ITV Channel Television's Karen Rankine, the 11th annual Construction Awards were a huge success and provided superb examples of the quality and commitment to excellence that run throughout this varied and economically vital industry.

Altogether, eleven awards were presented with ROK Construction winning both the much coveted Comprop Business of the Year Award and director, Robert Matthews, winning Hepburns Industry Achiever of the Year Award for providing the stewardship that enabled the firm to grow successfully throughout the recession.

“There was an outstanding array of winners and nominees on show last night,” said David Morris, Chairman of the Jersey Construction Council Awards 2015.

“The industry has felt the impact of the recent economic downturn but has responded well by ensuring that we become renowned for delivering both excellence in our work and high standards of customer service. These qualities have been underpinned by a commitment to health and safety and sustainability that is displayed so well in projects such as Plémont, St James Centre that was submitted by Larsen Group and AC Mauger & Son Ltd’s Vision Zero health & safety initiative.

“As an industry, we are keen that people see construction as a varied and fulfilling career option. I think that with winners like Mark Brandon, who won the Skills Jersey Star of the Future Award and Peter Snape, winner of the JeCC Lifetime Achievement Award, we are able to show people of all ages that construction offers a lot more than jobs, it offers career paths that can be followed for a lifetime.

“The panel of independent judges did a wonderful job deciding upon the winners and I’d like to thank Miles Hilton-Barber who gave us the most inspirational talk and showed us that we can all achieve whatever we want in life.”

The awards were attended by over 300 people at the Hotel de France who enjoyed a champagne reception sponsored by Coppolo & Coyde and, in addition to being inspired by Miles Hilton-Barber, during dinner the audience enjoyed the music of Hayley and Will, a local acoustic duo who regularly perform musical entertainment at events around the Island. DJ Nelson finished the evening once the awards presentation was complete.
