There are seminars and briefings every week in Jersey, but here's one with a difference - law firm Hanson Renouf are presenting a Sports Regulatory Seminar next month.

The firm say that there has already been a good response to the event, which takes place at noon on 11 September at their offices on Hill Street.

St Brelade Constable Steve Pallett, whose job in the States is "Assistant Minster for Sport" said that he was pleased that the professions were taking an interest.

He said: “I am delighted that there has been such interest from sports clubs and organisations in this seminar.  The topics covered are significant to all sports with the new Charities Law in particular offering opportunities to clubs and associations.”

Ruth Johnson, the Director of Social Policy for the States of Jersey, will be opening the seminar with her talk on sports clubs and the Charities Law - something of great interest to club members and committees of existing sports clubs in Jersey, as well as people who may be considering starting up new clubs.

The liability for injuries in sport talk, by personal injury specialist Alexandra Baker of Hanson Renouf, will be relevant not only to sports clubs but to all who work in sports and fitness, which Jersey has a large market for.

Coming from London is sports law expert, Christopher Stoner QC. Christopher has acted for numerous governing bodies in sports as diverse as football, swimming, diving, cricket, tennis, rugby and boxing and as well as prosecuting and defending in regulatory and disciplinary matters. He will give his talk on the essentials of good disciplinary process (including the selection process) as well as touching on the use of social media.

Nikki Holmes, Sports Club Officer said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for sports clubs and associations to hear from top speakers about matters that often cause them concern.  I am particularly interested to hear Christopher Stoner QC’s thoughts on the use of social media as this is a very hot topic for clubs at the moment.”
