Unemployment falls again in Jersey

Unemployment figures for the island fell by 140 last year, according to recently released data released.

In its report for the final quarter of 2022, Statistics Jersey record that 670 people were registered as actively seeking work, 130 fewer than the previous quarter according to the seasonally adjusted figure and 140 fewer than in 2021.

The figure was made up of 390 women and 280 men.

There was also a decrease in the number of long-term unemployed with the 200 registered for more than 12 months constituting a reduction of 120 on the previous year and a reduction of ten on the previous quarter.

Of the 670 registered as actively seeking work, 250 were engaged in some form of paid employment and classified as 'underemployed', including 90 who belonged to the long-term category.

Statistics Jersey note that unemployed Jerseyresidents are not required to register as actively seeking work but it is a condition of receiving income support that individuals appear on the register.

Of those on the register at the end of last year 590 – or 88% – were in receipt of income support, the same percentage as 2017 but 5% lower than 2021's proportion.
