Leading offshore law firm Appleby has announced its one-year partnership with disability boating charity, Wetwheels Jersey, complementing the Group’s status of being named the Official Law Firm of the 35th America’s Cup.
James Gaudin, Corporate Partner in Appleby’s Jersey office said: “Our involvement as the Official Law Firm of the 35th America's Cup not only brings us excitement for our colleagues in Bermuda but globally for all 10 of our offices as it brings with it an opportunity to educate our local communities about the competition for the oldest trophy in international sport.”
James added: “We believe that everybody has a right to access the sea and Wetwheels is a fantastic non-profit initiative that has shown that this is possible. We are looking forward to working with Wetwheels this year and hope that our involvement will both educate and inspire disabled and disadvantaged people in Jersey whilst enjoying being at sea on a safe and reliable vessel. All donations made to Wetwheels are used to get more people on the water therefore Appleby’s funds will significantly increase the number of trips undertaken by Wetwheels throughout this year.”
Andy Le Seelleur, Wetwheels Trustee added: “We are very grateful for Appleby’s enthusiasm and commitment to help Wetwheels achieve its goal of making every trip out on the purpose-built power catamaran free of charge. Wetwheels has been a huge success story in the island since we started three years ago with over 2,500 passengers enjoying trips to the sea, many of whom, by virtue of a disability or other social disadvantage would never otherwise have the opportunity. This partnership will help us to inspire people of all ages across the island and will ensure more passengers than ever will be able to experience the amazing maritime countryside that surrounds our island”.
Appleby was named the Official Law Firm of the 35th America’s Cup in December 2014 and as part the partnership Appleby's Bermuda office has been providing the America’s Cup Event Authority with a full range of legal services for the 35th America’s Cup.
The 35th America’s Cup is set to commence on Friday 26 May in Bermuda with the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers, followed by the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Challenger Playoffs. This is where Sir Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR team hope to become the official Challenger, meeting defending champions ORACLE TEAM USA in the America’s Cup Match presented by Louis Vuitton.
