A new annual conference, sponsored by Pinel Advocates and PwC CI, is set to launch on 21 June 2018 at the Royal Yacht Hotel. Titled ‘The future of wealth’, the International Banking Forum is set to bring senior industry leaders, regulators including the European Banking Authority, and policy makers together to provide insights into key issues effecting the international financial services sector.

Guest speakers lined up to address delegates on the day include the most senior Permanent Secretary adviser in HMT - the Treasury who advised three Chancellors through the financial crisis including on the bail-out of the major banks setting the tone.  Now appointed to the House of Lords, Baron Nicholas Macpherson’s audience address will be one of many highlights.  This will be followed by keynote speeches from David Soanes, UK Country head of UBS, and Christopher Davies CEO of HSBC International, who is in charge of no less than 19 jurisdictions. This is a fantastic opportunity to hear about strategy from those at the very top of their game in the banking world.

Not to be missed by current and future leaders is a leadership forum, which will be led by 400m runner and world champion athlete, Roger Black. A former captain of Team GB, Roger was always a firm favourite of the crowds.

Technology and innovation is key for the future of a stable and inclusive financial ecosystem, with secure financing available for citizens, businesses and innovators everywhere, supported by excellence in regulation.  Key figures such as the Barclays’ Chief Innovation Officer, the ex Cyber Security lead in the MoD, Tech UK’s Co-Chair of the Open Banking working groups, and heads of innovation in robots and AI will address the issue of how to innovate.  A key topic of discussion surrounds the aim for a thriving European economy and flourishing society. How will international banks deliver on their role in society as partners in prosperity and what is the future of banking services?

Five years into the onset of the Banking Union, 25 years after the launch of the European Monetary Union, as changes to allow banks to fail bite, and global changes to tackle illicit currency flows and to create a fairer world take effect, the financial services landscape has changed materially.  Yet despite these steps forward, international banking continues to face significant challenges.  Disrupters and challenger banks, Brexit and elections in key member states form part of this complexity.

This new entry in the local calendar aims to become a landmark annual event in defining key challenges and opportunities for the banking sector and to discuss and debate solutions. The theme for 2018’s inaugural conference sets the future bar high, in covering an agenda which delves deeper into innovations in financial technology, strategic developments, regulatory change, as well as significant changes in compliance.

Conference Chairman, James Mews, of Pinel Advocates stated, “During the ten years I worked in government, I was always amazed that there was no forum to address the key issues around banking and financial services. It is a pleasure to be able to launch the first annual forum for the good of the island and to examine such vital matters.  The range of speakers is absolutely first class, from Baron Nicholas Macpherson to Roger Black, and Pinel Advocates is delighted to sponsor this event and to contribute to thought leadership in respect of these key issues here in Jersey.”

PwC CI Director and Banking Leader, James de Veulle, added: “We’re especially pleased to support this inaugural event and to play a part in bringing together such a high calibre mix of keynote speakers. The issues raised and insights provided by such a range of prominent speakers from the cutting edge of international banking and wealth services should prompt a fascinating debate about the future direction of global banking and investment and also help identify the role that a world-class jurisdiction such as Jersey will play in that future.”

The International Banking Forum will take place on Thursday 21 June at the Royal Yacht Hotel. Delegates will gain new insights and can take part in the discussions that will substantially enhance their understanding of the Future of Banking.  As well as vigorous debate and robust exchanges of views, there will be ample networking opportunities over breakfast, lunch and evening drinks.
