Cancer Research UK’s Chief Executive found out about life on the shop floor at the charity’s St Helier shop during her visit to Jersey.

Michelle Mitchell, making her first visit to the island, met cancer patients Rose Shepherd and Jenny Miley in the shop in Halkett Place.

Ms Mitchell - wearing a £15 Whistles dress bought from a Cancer Research UK shop - met staff and volunteers and thanked them for their hard work raising funds for the charity’s life-saving work.

She heard how, with support from islanders, the shop had established itself as a vibrant part of the community since it was opened in October 2018. And she was told how islanders had supported it by donating and buying quality goods, raising funds for the charity’s life-saving work.

Ms Mitchell said: “It was a real pleasure to go to the St Helier shop, meet Carina and her volunteers, and thank them for all they do for Cancer Research UK.

“It was also a privilege to meet Rose and Jenny, patients who have benefited from the work Cancer Research UK has done.”

Both Rose and Jenny had taken part in Race for Life the day before, along with their 15-strong team Jenroses Rainbow Warriors.

In the evening Ms Mitchell also met members of the Cancer Research UK Jersey fundraising committee, including chairman Richard Hughes, and Relay for Life committee members, to thank them for their ongoing support.

She told them how incredibly important their support was and extended her heartfelt thanks for their continued commitment.

Cancer Research UK is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2022 and Ms Mitchell told the group the organisation had ‘big and bold’ plans for the next 20 years - but they would only be possible to fulfil with their backing.

The Jersey Cancer Research UK fundraising committee was founded in 1953 and has raised more than £3.7m.

Money raised by both committees is used to support the charity’s work in Southampton where many cancer patients from the Channel Islands go for treatment.
