Outstanding Employer Awards were given to Jersey businesses at the Jersey Employment Trust’s (JET) Able to Work Conference at the Hotel de France on Thursday 3rd October 2013. JET acknowledged the valued contribution that Jersey employers provide to the Island’s economy by employing people with disabilities. Aquasplash was named the ‘Employer of the Year’ at the JET awards. Seven other employers received an ‘Outstanding Employer’ award including Signature Executive Transport, Spoor and Fisher, States of Jersey Health Dept., Jersey Trees for Life, Jersey Evening Post, Servisair and Seymour Hotels of Jersey.

The employers were not only judged on the number of people with a disability they employ but further criteria was considered such as; the adaptations and quality of support they have provided to employees with a disability. Their relationship with JET, commitment to supporting JET and their service users including training they have provided.
This year’s conference title was ‘Opening Minds, Opening Doors’ and was reminding employers to keep an open mind regarding employing people with a disability, to look at potential and not prejudge or make assumptions on peoples abilities. Guest speakers included Chief Minister, Ian Gorst, who gave the perspective from the States of Jersey. Director of HR in the States of Jersey, Mark Sinclair spoke about a new Internships programme between JET and the States of Jersey. Speak Out, an advocacy group, spoke about ‘Inspirational People’ and Francesca Martinez spoke about her experiences of employment and disability. Delegates discussed Internships in more detail in the workshops and private sector employers were asked to think about providing similar opportunities within their businesses. The 180 delegates included JET service users (people with a disability or long term health condition), Jersey employers (from the private and public sector), linked agencies as well as a number of States members.
