The successful applicant for the Helping Wings 2022 Flying Bursary, which is sponsored by Ports of Jersey, has now begun her flying instruction.

16-year-old Heather Armstrong, who is profoundly deaf, applied for the bursary, which provides a local resident who may not otherwise get the chance to learn to fly with £2000 worth of training.

Heather has experienced her first flight with Synergy Flight Training and is looking forward to the full course she will receive. She said: “'I am thrilled to have this opportunity and really enjoyed my first lesson. I am honoured that Helping Wings chose me for this incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience, which I applied for without really thinking I would actually get it!”

This is the seventh year that Ports of Jersey have sponsored the bursary, through which Helping Wings have welcomed students with a variety of disabilities onto their training scheme.
