At the start of the year Adrian Hick decided to set himself a new challenge and so dusted off his running shoes with the plan of running an ultra-marathon. For those that aren’t sure an ultra-marathon is a running race of any distance over the classic marathon distance of 26.2 miles and the one that caught his eye is called Race to The King and is 53.5 miles along the South Downs Way from Arundel in Sussex to Winchester in Hampshire, finishing on the steps of Winchester Cathedral (the ancient burial place of the Kings of England).
Adrian has completed a number of marathons in the past but this will be the furthest he has ever run in one go. In fact his colleagues have joked that it’s further than he drives his car in a week! Such are the demands of training for an ultra-marathon that Adrian has even completed the Brighton Marathon in April just as part of his preparation. This didn’t go entirely to plan as he tore a calf muscle during the race, however with the help of some really good (painful) physio he is confident he will make it to the start line. The big question though, is will he make it to the finish line?
Adrian works for Lloyds Banking Group and decided to run for Mind Jersey as it is the Bank’s charity of the year. He explained “wellbeing in the workplace is really important in Lloyds which includes great colleague engagement, striking the right work/life balance and promoting good mental wellbeing. We have a number of registered mental first aiders within the business who have been trained by Mind Jersey and are able to support colleagues in their busy lives. Recognising this area, and being able to talk things through when things are getting difficult in our lives is really important and Mind Jersey does a brilliant job of promoting and protecting good mental health for all.”
“We are delighted that Adrian is undertaking this challenge, on behalf of the charity”, said James Le Feuvre, Executive Director of Mind Jersey. “It underlines the very strong relationship that we have with Lloyds Bank here in Jersey and we wish Adrian the very best of luck”.
Adrian has set up a Just Giving fundraising page and would really love to raise £500 for Mind Jersey which would be matched £ for £ by Lloyds Bank's generous matched giving scheme. You can find out more about his challenge on the following link www.racetotheking.com
