Back in March, with 70 days to go until the anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen’s Coronation ceremony held on 2nd June 1953, St. George’s pupils launched their ambitious, whole-school ‘70 Good Deeds’ community project.

Their aim was to complete 70 Good Deeds ahead of the Jubilee weekend that would have a positive and lasting impact both within the school community and across the island. In the run-up to the Jubilee weekend, pupils are celebrating not only achieving but exceeding their target with the culmination of a project that has involved every member of the school community including pupils, teachers, support staff and parents, who have all come together to celebrate the spirit of doing good things and the impact of being kind.

Pupils themselves came up with all the ideas for the projects they’ve carried out, and they have ranged from smaller tasks such as cake sales, dress down days and complementing our friends to much bigger deeds like raising funds to take a whole class from another school on a special adventure, creating ‘Helping Hampers’ filled with foods and good wishes for local people who may not be able to shop easily and even staging a singing performance for the residents of a care home. Every single year group has worked hard to complete their share of Good Deeds and celebrated everything the project has meant to them with a special visit from His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor Sir Stephen Dalton and Lady Dalton. Pupils and staff were thrilled to share more about ’70 Good Deeds’ and how it celebrates and echoes the many years of dedicated service demonstrated by Her Majesty The Queen.

Headmaster of St. George’s, Cormac Timothy, has this to say:

‘From the moment the children began to compile their ideas for Good Deeds, we knew that the project was going to be very special for us. I have been so inspired by their commitment to help as many people across the island, and far beyond, as possible. We’ve raised money for many good causes, we’ve provided practical help to different groups of people and we’ve looked after and nurtured our environment. Most importantly, every single Good Deed was conceived, developed and carried out with one goal – to spread kindness and goodwill as far as possible. Children and staff alike have gone above and beyond whist participating in this initiative. It’s made me feel extremely proud and has proven yet again that our school values of Kindness, Resilience, Achievement and Responsibility are truly lived here at St. George’s every day through the attitude, compassion and dedication of our pupils and staff. We’ve enjoyed the project so much we even have some tasks scheduled for after the Jubilee. I think the legacy of 70 Good Deeds is a permanent reminder that even in small ways, we can make a big difference to our own lives and to others. That when we set out to do positive and good things, their impact is always bigger than we imagine, and really brilliant things can happen.’
