The Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon is taking place on Sunday 2 October 2022 and registration is officially open.
Following two challenging years due to the ongoing Covid pandemic, organisers are looking forward to watching several thousands of runners pounding the roads of Jersey. The event previously adapted to a run-from-home challenge, in line with Covid guidelines.
The Marathon event regularly attracts over 2,500 runners, with over fifty percent of marathon runners coming from off the Island. In 2021, visiting runner numbers were impacted by Covid travel restrictions and government guidelines, however, organisers are already seeing promising levels of interest in the Jersey Marathon 2022 event.
Andrew Thomas, Race Director says, “It’s been a challenging two years for the Jersey Marathon Trust, due to the ongoing covid-19 restrictions, but thanks to the ongoing support from our sponsors and the local community, we feel we can plan forward and be more confident for 2022 with a return to a larger event that allows us to welcome back more visiting and elite runners. The early signs are positive, entries from both visiting and local runners continue to come in and we are in conversation with a few a specialist sporting travel and running clubs who wish to join us in Jersey this year.”
Henry Baye, CEO, Standard Chartered Jersey, says, "We're really looking forward to putting on the 16th Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon. It's an important date for the Island, bringing together the community, welcoming athletes from abroad and encouraging everyone to get out there to be fit and healthy. It Is always an opportunity for us to see the wonderful community spirit of our Island in full bloom."
"Importantly, it is fantastic opportunity to raise vital money for St Johns Ambulance, Futuremakers and other worthy charities, who have unfortunately suffered a deficit in funds because of the pandemic."
The Jersey Marathon, which welcomes runners of all abilities, will operate the familiar format of the Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon, Ravenscroft Relay Race and the Marathon Mile sponsored by Jersey Development Company.
The ever-popular Ravenscroft Relay Race runs alongside the Marathon, with teams of five uniting to take on the full marathon distance, running varying distances of three to seven miles each. Organisers are encouraging local businesses to use the event as a teambuilding exercise and to help promote health and fitness within the workplace. The Industry Cups are back for 2022 and are always an opportunity for friendly competition between the corporates teams.
Relay sponsors, Ravenscroft Group says, “After an unusual year in 2020, it was fantastic to see 125 teams taking part this year and as sponsor, Ravenscroft looks forward to welcoming more runners in 2022. As a company with offices in Jersey and Guernsey, it was fantastic that the winners came from both islands because we know how much sportsmen and women love a bit of inter-island competition.”
The Marathon Mile, sponsored by the Jersey Development Company, is also set for Sunday 2 October, following the huge success of the inaugural event in 2021, which saw over five hundred runners of mixed age and ability take on the one-mile course through the heart of St Helier.
A key feature of the Marathon Mile event is the School Shield, which is awarded to the school with the most entries, pro-rata. And in 2022, this was won by FCJ Primary School, who had over one hundred children take on the mile distance. There is likewise a Junior Sports Club Cup category, which is won by the club with fastest average time, and this was awarded to Jersey Spartans Juniors in 2021. Organisers hope both FCJ Primary School and Jersey Spartans Juniors will return to defend their titles in 2022.
The Standard Chartered Jersey Marathon 2022 is raising funds for Futuremakers. The charity is a global initiative of Standard Chartered Bank that seeks to tackle inequality by supporting disadvantaged young people, especially people with visual impairments, to learn new skills and improve their chances of getting a job or starting their own business. Additionally, funds will go to St John Ambulance, the Bank's chosen local charity. All Jersey charities are invited to use the event in 2022 to raise funds for their own causes.
The success of the Jersey Marathon event is only made possible by the work of hundreds of volunteers. Over four hundred volunteers gave up their time to support the event in 2021. Katie Millar, Marshal Manager, says “Volunteers make marathon events happen, Jersey is no different and we just could not do it without them. They are a vital part of the event’s operation, safety and support of the hundreds of runners around the course as they take on the challenge. Thank you so much to all volunteers, and if you want to get involved in 2022, then you can register through our website jersey-marathon.com.”
