Elizabeth College emerged victorious in all three age groups of the Guernsey De Putron Challenge which kicked off yesterday (9 November) at St James.

Elizabeth College Junior School claimed the Year 6 trophy after beating runners-up La Mare De Carteret with a clear nine point lead.

This four team final also included Castel and Melrose who had been neck and neck throughout the rounds until the final round, Around the World, where Melrose finished with a two point lead.

In the Year 8 event, Elizabeth College and first timers Guernsey Grammar School both emerged at the top of the seven team heat to contest against each other in the final resulting in a 13 point lead and win for  Elizabeth College.

The pressure was then on for Elizabeth College’s Post-16 team to win the final trophy and subsequently obtain a clean sweep across each of the three year groups.

Elizabeth College were up against holders, The Ladies’ College, as well as The Guernsey Grammar School and Sixth Form College and College of Further Education.

This event kicked off with a new team digital coding round, designed and supported by Digital Greenhouse.  Here teams were challenged to write a computer coding programme to safely navigate a Lego EV3 robot through a maze using Lego’s own programming tools and an inbuilt Gyro sensor.  The Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre programmed the fastest and most accurate robot to complete the course winning valuable points for their team.

After the eight preliminary rounds The Ladies’ College and Elizabeth College teams had progressed into the final.  This was extremely tight resulting in just one point dividing the two teams.

The three Elizabeth College teams will now go on to compete against the winning Jersey teams at the inter-island final at the Grand Hotel in Jersey on 23 November.

The inter-island final will be live streamed for those people who are unable to attend on Thursday 23 November:  links to this will be posted on the De Putron Challenge’s official social media channels.
