Guernsey Electricity has pledged to cover the cost of illuminating the Christmas lights in St Peter Port.
For the second year running, Guernsey Electricity has said it won’t charge the Constables of St Peter Port for the electricity used by the Christmas lights.
‘Guernsey Electricity has been a long standing contributor to the Christmas lights on the Bridge but decided to extend our support to St Peter Port last year. Christmas is a special time of year for our customers and we are more than happy to once again step in and help make Town as festive as possible,’ said chief executive officer Alan Bates.
‘Most islanders will go to Town at some point over December, whether it’s to shop or socialise and it would be a very different atmosphere without the lights. It’s fantastic to see that people have been supporting the fundraising and hopefully our contribution means more of the money can be used to buy new lights for future years.’
Jacquie Robin, chair of the Christmas Lights Committee, said the lights added something special to St Peter Port.
‘It’s a huge thank you to Guernsey Electricity for covering the cost of the electricity used by the Christmas lights,’ she said.
‘So far, we have reached about 80 per cent of the cost of covering this year’s lights. People are very positive that they feel it should be an island responsibility as we all benefit. However, we still need more, particularly corporate sponsorship, because without it, there will be a big question mark about whether there will be Christmas lights in St Peter Port in future.’
