Guernsey is only behind South Korea in worldwide broadband adoption rates, according to Akamai’s ‘State of The Internet’ Q4 2016 report.

The report measures uptake of broadband services of an average minimum speed of 4Mbps and found that 97% of Guernsey residents benefit from this level of service.

Akamai is an American provider of content delivery network services and has been producing the ‘State of The Internet’ report quarterly since 2008.

Globally, 4Mbps broadband adoption was 79% in the third quarter signalling a global improvement in the standard of connections. In Guernsey Sure introduced a 60Mbps service last year to complement its 20Mbps basic offering and its 40Mbps standard product.

Sure continues to make significant investment in the island’s broadband infrastructure to roll out its fibre network to more street cabinets around the island. These cabinets shorten the length of copper lines to customers and result in more homes being able to benefit from faster speeds, soon to include 100Mbps broadband, which is currently being tested.

Sure’s acting chief marketing officer, Mike Fawkner-Corbett, said that the report demonstrates that Guernsey is in a strong position and even faster speeds will be available soon.

“Being second in the world for broadband connectivity is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the investment by Sure and others in the island’s digital future,” he said.

“65% of our customers could access faster broadband services today and we expect that recent changes to our pricing, and ever-growing internet usage, will make that an easy decision for many of our customers. Our new pricing also ensures that customers can access pricing that is in line with the UK market.”
