Year 5 pupils from La Mare de Carteret Primary School have become the first school, and largest ever team to take on the 30 runs in 30 days challenge in aid of Les Bourgs Hospice.
The 48 nine and 10 years old, along with their teachers Paul James and Karen Lane, will aim to run 30 minutes a day for 30 days and while the official challenge starts on Saturday, the pupils have started early to take into account the half-term holiday at the end of October.
‘I enjoy running and was keen to take part in 30 runs in 30 days and then thought about getting the children involved because as a school, we are very committed to being healthier. This week, it’s our school’s healthy week where we are highlighting the benefits of eating healthily and being more active, our PSHE curriculum is very focused on leading a healthy lifestyle and so this ties in really well,’ said Mr James.
Each week day, the pupils will head out for a run around the playing fields at the back of the school and will then have the opportunity to do to the Park Run on Saturday mornings with Mr James.
‘The great thing about 30 runs is that it doesn’t matter how fast you are or how far you go, it’s simply about being active for 30 minutes while raising money for a really great cause,’ he said.
30 runs in 30 days, which is once again sponsored by Appleby Global, is the final event in this year’s Les Bourgs Hospice’s 30/30 initiatives.
‘Islanders clearly love a challenge as once again, we have had a really good take up for each of the 30/30 events. Often we have small groups of friends or colleagues taking part but we’ve never had a team of 50 enter. I’m delighted that the children from La Mare de Carteret Primary are taking part as it highlights the inclusivity of the challenges and shows that almost anyone can take part,’ said Les Bourgs Hospice fundraising administrator Trish De Carteret.
‘There is still time to sign up for 30 runs in 30 days and hopefully we’ll have a record number of participants which together with Appleby’s support means we can raise more money than we have done in previous years.’
