Rick Denton has been appointed as the first international representative on the Council of the Institute of Directors (IoD). The role has been created in recognition of the increasing importance of the offshore world to the IoD, with ten percent of its members coming from the business communities in Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man and other international locations.

Rick has 30 years’ experience in the finance industry, including leadership roles locally with Coutts, Bank of Bermuda, Fortis Intertrust and Barclays. For the last three years he has been chief executive of a family office business and has held non-executive director positions in property and private equity businesses. He is now MD of Denton Lovel Associates, a collaboration of industry professionals, based from the Channel Islands and the UK, which provides directorships and manages offshore and onshore projects.

A member of the IoD for 20 years, he has recently achieved its Diploma in Company Direction, studying with the Guernsey Training Agency.

A keen sportsman, Rick is also Chair of the Channel Islands Lawn Tennis Association and Treasurer of the Guernsey Island Games Association.

As IoD Council member he will represent the interests of the international communities in London for a three-year term, ending in 2019.

He said: ‘I am delighted to take up this position on behalf of the international business community. Corporate governance and investor protection is of increasing importance offshore and I believe the IoD has an important role to play in ensuring that standards are promoted and upheld.

‘Being part of the most prestigious leadership group in the UK will also give an opportunity to show the many strengths of how business is done internationally and, as a result, will promote business links with the islands.’

Linda Johnson, Chair of the Guernsey branch of the IoD, added: ‘Sincere congratulations to Rick.  His appointment to IoD Council is an incredible achievement and we are delighted that a Guernsey branch IoD member will be representing the interests of Guernsey and all international branches at the highest level of the IoD. I wish Rick all the very best and look forward to working closely with him throughout the term of his appointment.’
