Runners have until tomorrow to take advantage of the early bird rate to enter this year’s Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management Guernsey Marathon and relay races.
It is the second year that Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management has sponsored the annual race which is taking place on Sunday 28 August 2016. The event has become a key part of the island’s sporting calendar, attracting competitors from around the world. Last year’s race saw a record number of teams take part in the relay race and more than 165 overseas runners from 18 different countries enter the marathon.
The event is open to runners of all ages and abilities and runners can complete the marathon as an individual or as a relay team of two or five, who can compete on behalf of a business, charity or club.
Peter Head, Race Director for Guernsey Marathon, said: “An event of this size could not take place without generous sponsors and so we are very pleased to have the support of Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management again.
“We are hoping for another record turnout this year, but with a limited number of places, we’d advise those wanting to take part to get their entry in now to avoid disappointment and take advantage of the early bird rates at the same time.”
The marathon will take runners through all ten parishes and along some of the island’s most scenic roads. The race course begins in the heart of St Peter Port and follows the coast to measure the UKA accredited distance of 26 miles and 385 yards.
Funds raised from the marathon will be donated to Guernsey Cheshire Home, a charity dedicated to providing care and support for adults living with severe physical disabilities.
Andy Finch, Head of Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management Guernsey, said: “Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management is very proud to be sponsoring the marathon and relay races for the second year. It has become such a popular event for both local and international runners - and it is really helping to put Guernsey on the map thanks to the coastal route which takes full advantage of our beautiful island scenery.
“We’re pleased that the Guernsey Cheshire Home will again be the beneficiary charity of the event. It is an extremely worthy local charity which does such brilliant work in the community so we’re very pleased to support them.”
Trophies and cash prizes will be presented to the first (£500), second (£250), and third placed (£125) male and female runners. There will also be trophies for the first Guernsey runner and the first Channel Island runner.
As in 2015, a bonus prize of £500 is on offer for the runner who can break the current record of 2 hours, 18 minutes and 11 seconds set in 2013 by Freddie Sittuk from Kenya.
Online entries must be received by 6pm on Thursday 25 August, postal entries will be accepted until 6pm on Friday 26 August 2016, as will entries in person at registration on Saturday 27 August 2016.
There will be a limit of 400 runners for the marathon and 100 teams for the relays.
