The trustees of the Sarah Groves Foundation are delighted to announce that they have pledged the sum of £50,000 in support of an exciting redevelopment programme for the Children’s Library at the Guille-Allès Library in St Peter Port. The Foundation will be funding the larger of the two rooms, which will be known as “The Sarah Groves Room.”
The project, to be completed by the end of the year, aims to completely redevelop and refurbish the two children’s rooms at the library so that children and young adults can further their knowledge, education and love of reading in an innovative child-friendly environment.
The recently announced Tour de Sez 2018 Guernsey to Amsterdam cycle ride, scheduled for September 2018 will be used to raise some of the funds for this project. Fundraising for the Tour de Sez 2018 starts this Saturday with a flag day at both Waitrose stores on the island.
The Children’s Library project, which has been designed by Oliver Westgarth and Chris Martel of CCD Architects, will include a variety of different spaces and levels allowing children to explore and make use of the large space or hide away in ‘cubby-holes’ to read a book.
The Sarah Groves Foundation was established in 2013 in memory of Sarah Groves who was brutally murdered in India four years ago. The Foundation was set up to enhance the lives of young people, especially those less fortunate than Sarah ever was, making the Children’s Library Project a perfect initiative for the trustees to support.
The Sarah Groves Foundation is the largest single sponsor of this project and their £50,000 contribution represents the largest single investment made in the Foundation’s history.
Kate Groves, Sarah’s mother and trustee of the Sarah Groves Foundation, said: “The projects we support match specific criteria to ensure maximum benefit to young people. The Children’s Library Project at the Guille-Allès Library is perfect for us and when complete, will be available to children and to families with young children throughout the entire Guernsey community. We look forward to embarking on this journey with the team over the next few months. We feel honoured to be able to link Sarah’s name directly to the room for which we are responsible. Enabling her name to live on in a positive and meaningful way has always been a key objective of the Sarah Groves Foundation.”
Children’s Librarian at the Guille-Allès Library, Cornelia James, said: “The library is privileged to have the Sarah Groves Foundation’s support, so that together we can enhance the lives of local children and offer them a modern and exciting environment to learn and develop. This project is all about improving the local facilities for young children and it will be a long-lasting legacy for the Groves family and for everyone who knew Sarah.”
