Male Uprising Guernsey (MUG) is asking office workers to swap their suits for the traditional Bermuda summertime wear of shorts and long socks.

The charity hopes that businesses will allow their workforce to support the cause and don shorts for the week commencing 15th August.

Gavin Ferguson, MUG council member, said: ‘It’s an easy idea that everyone can get involved in. There is no training or physical exertion required and we’re not asking for sponsorship. We simply want to remind men that male cancers take the lives of too many islanders.’

The traditional Bermuda office wear comprises smart shorts, long socks, shirt, tie and a suit jacket or blazer. This combination dates back to the First World War when there was a shortage of clothing in Bermuda.

The wardrobe-swapping event will start on Monday 15th August and run through the five-day working week.

MUG is a charitable trust devoted to raising awareness of male cancers and supporting the men of Guernsey who are affected by prostate, bowel and testicular cancer.

Mr Ferguson concludes: ‘We hope the weather will be conducive and that the idea will remind men to be more aware of their physical health and that they should get any little niggle checked out. Early detection of cancer can make a big difference to treatment and health outcomes.’
