Volunteers are being urged to come forward to help create a stunning view overlooking St Peter Port.

Staff and members from the Channel Islands Co-operative Society are already set to work along members of Guernsey’s Art of Living Community Volunteers group to remove branches from below the Belvedere lookout at Fort George. However, other volunteers are also welcome to join the efforts between 9.30am and 12.30pm on Sunday 1st October.

‘Self-seeded trees have sprung up over the year, with branches obscuring the view in all directions,’ said Andrew Pouteaux, local organiser of the Art of Living Community Volunteers. ‘Professional tree surgeons will cut back the trees below the lookout to give a 135-degree view of St Peter Port, the harbour and islands. Then, we need to clear the site- and that’s where the volunteers come in.’

Mr Pouteaux said the volunteers would be cutting large branches into smaller section as part of the work. ‘We’ll also be taking the branches to a removal area, with a chipper operated by professionals being used to turn the small branches into chippings. These chippings will be spread over the ground, which has already been cleared,’ he said.

‘The result will be a stunning view that can be enjoyed by islanders and visitors alike. It’s fantastic that staff and members of the Channel Islands Co-operative Society are volunteering for this community project. Of course, other volunteers are also welcome to come along. Just remember to wear suitable clothing, such as long sleeves tops, trousers and solid shoes.’

Tanya Dorrity, the Society’s community officer, said: ‘As a community retailer, we’re committed to helping improve the local environment – and that ambition is shared by our staff and members. Thank you as well to the volunteers already signed up. If anyone else can help please get in touch. We’re providing water and some fruit on the day, and if you want to volunteer bring gardening gloves and any tools you might need.’

Volunteers will meet the Belvedere light house at 9.30am on Sunday 1st October, where they’ll receive instructions for the work. To sign up, please go to www.channelislands.coop/cleanup.
