Jersey lends a helping paw amid overcrowding at UK shelters

13 northern cats are to be re-homed in Jersey after a local rescue organisation decided to lend a helping paw amid reported overcrowding at UK animal shelters.

Many shelters across the UK are having to turn away animals due to the lack of space, with fewer pets currently being rehomed due to economic uncertainties.

The Jersey Branch of the Cat Action Trust is attempting to do their bit to help with this problem by bringing 13 abandoned cats over to the island to be re-homed.

Within a day of reaching out to the Cat Action Trust's UK headquarters to offer their help, the staff at the Jersey branch had a call from Leeds.

They were informed that a total of 19 cats and kittens were being made homeless in two weeks time as the result of an eviction.

The owner had tried all the other local animal rescue shelters in the area, but they were all too full to help.

Following liaisons with the Leeds branch of the Cat Action Trust, the staff at the Jersey branch decided that they would take in 13 of the young adults cats while the kittens who were too young to travel would remain in the UK.

The cats will be transported to Jersey by the Pet Bus next weekend, with pictures and more details becoming available when they arrive.

A £100 donation to the Cat Action Trust to cover the cost of transport will be required from anyone wishing to adopt one of the cats.

However, they will all already be neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.

The staff at the Jersey branch explained: "The cats are all domestic but some may be a bit shy so may need socialising before rehoming. As they have lived in a multi-cat household, they will need to go in pairs or to homes with other cats."

Anyone interested in a can phone the local Cat Action Trust on 01534 631113 to be placed on a list for re-homing these 'Northerners'.
