£600k EV charging network experiences two-hour "outage"

Thursday 08 August 2024

Jersey Electricity has apologised to its customers after its island-wide electric vehicle charging network went down yesterday afternoon.

Investigations are also underway into the cause of Wednesday afternoon’s two-hour outage to “avoid similar problems occurring in the future”, a statement from the energy provider said.

Islanders noticed, and started to post on social media, that some 'Evolve' chargers were not functioning properly when going to plug in their electric vehicles yesterday afternoon.

Jersey Electricity confirmed shortly afterwards that they were "experiencing an issue with the Evolve charging network" and "working to resolve this as soon as possible".

The issue has now been resolved, but in a statement supplied to Express this morning, the provider apologised to customers of its newly-installed £600,000 Evolve EV charging network.

The statement said: "JE's system operating partner have said they experienced a fault with their system which affected other EV partner jurisdictions.

"The cause of the outage is being investigated to avoid similar problems occurring in the future."

The island's only electricity provider announced last May that it was ploughing £600,000 into future-proofing the electric-vehicle network, with an upgrade to its system.

The 'Evolve network' came in response to a rising number of electric vehicles in the island and a forecasted greater demand for public charging.
