Jersey women lose a place in football semis... after a coin toss

Wednesday 12 July 2023

An administrative error has denied Jersey a place in the women’s football semi-final – despite the squad having been told yesterday that they had made the last four.

Jersey finished second in their group meaning they faced an anxious wait to discover whether they would qualify for the semi-finals as the best-placed runner-up.

The Caesareans and Menorca finished their group stages with an identical record meaning that the place in the last four would be decided by whichever side had the best disciplinary record.

It had been thought – and relayed to Jersey coach Chad Morris and his side – that Jersey would progress by virtue of having picked up one less yellow card.

But on Wednesday morning, following an appeal from Menorca, it was discovered that an administrative error had been made and instead the semi-final berth would be decided by the toss of a coin – which Jersey lost.

Jersey had bounced back from opening day defeat against Bermuda to comfortably dispatch to Aland and Hitra.
